Fell & Sell Dungeon Biomes
Three underground layers, a boss at each gate, and a forest that fights back.
Fell & Sell does not use a single endless beige cave. The full release is a stack of biomes. You clear floors, fight the zone boss, and only then drop into a new palette of enemies, traps, special rooms, and loot. The July demo was almost entirely the first layer. This page is the map the studio published before launch, plus how it connects to the cabin and the Living Forest.
The Shallow Dungeon
This is every shopkeeper’s first descent and the space demo players already know. It has been expanded: more special rooms, more skeleton variants, still the place where careless runners join the undead. Expect the classic loop — procedurally laid halls, chests that may ambush you, altars, and a teleporter choice at the end of a floor: cash out or draft a perk and go deeper.
Skeletons here teach block timing and trap literacy. Do not treat “I beat the demo” as a license to skip banking. The Shallow layer is still where most unbanked hauls die because greed feels safe. Pair this biome with Dungeon Survival and Combat.
The Overgrown Dungeon
Further down, nature takes the stone. Bushes, vines, and grass cover old floors. The studio’s lore note is blunt: skeletons in this layer were wiped out by goblins, who now use it as a hideout. Goblins are small and territorial. They already won a war against an undead horde, so do not play them like tutorial fodder.
This is the first full-game shock if you only fought bones. Bring a shield, watch tall grass for ambushes, and expect different loot tables — forage-adjacent mats show up here the way bone and rust dominate above. If you also run the outdoor Forest Foraging loop, goblin raids up top and goblin halls below are the same faction in two climates.
The Darkest Dungeon
The deepest named underground layer. Little daylight; paths lit by rivers of souls. Survivors talk about reanimated adventurers attacking the living — a nasty joke if you have been selling gear to those same archetypes at your counter. Skeletons here are armored and well equipped. The apex threat is the Necromancer: ranged magic and zombie summons. Loot quality is the reason to be here. It is also the reason to leave the moment your bag is legendary enough to fund a shop tier.
Mana and ranged answers matter more than in the Shallow Dungeon. If your HUD mana bar still looks like a leftover, it is not — 1.0.1 even had to stop that bar stuttering above 250. See Enemies for pack behavior and Bosses for the gate fight that lets you in or out of a zone.
Bosses as biome keys
At the end of each zone a boss waits. Defeat it to enter the next biome. That is the official structure, not a fan wiki guess. The boss room closes the gate behind you. Demo pathfinding on stairs was patched; launch 1.0.2 fixed generators that could wall off the only passage so a floor became unbeatable. If a layout looks impossible, update first, then assume a secret breakable wall from Demo 2.0’s destructible environments.
The Living Forest is not a fourth cave
Behind the shop you can step into dungeon or forage the local forest. The forest is a surface biome: thunderstorms, mushroom season, goblin raiding parties. It feeds different recipes than skeleton halls. It does not replace the Darkest Dungeon. Use it when you need mats without committing a deep unbanked bag. Full walkthrough: Forest Foraging.
How to plan a run across biomes
- Bank in the Shallow Dungeon until your shop actually has tables and a weapon upgrade.
- Treat the first Overgrown boss as a scheduled extract, not a “one more room” impulse.
- Enter Darkest Dungeon only when decoration combat buffs are placed — they carry in — and when you can afford to lose the bag.
- After 1.0.2, open doors stay open; use that as a breadcrumb so you do not circle into uncleared necromancer rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many dungeon biomes are in the full game?
Three named underground biomes: Shallow, Overgrown, and Darkest. The Living Forest is a separate outdoor loop from the cabin, not a fourth cave layer.
Do I have to kill a boss to change biomes?
Yes. The studio's preview is explicit: a boss ends each zone, and beating it is how you descend into the next biome's enemies and loot.
Are Overgrown Dungeon enemies still skeletons?
No. Goblins drove them out and occupy that layer. Bring crowd-control habits from forest raids; bone-only muscle memory will get you surrounded.
When should I first enter the Darkest Dungeon?
After you can survive armored skeletons and have a plan for necromancer summons. If a single death would bankrupt the shop, you are too early.
